Shenmue 3 disappointment

Anyone else genuinely disappointed in Shenmue 3? I mean it's great to have the world back but it really feels dead. It sticks too closely to old formulas that died almost 20 years ago. It also doesn't advance the story much. After all the delays I expected more. I wonder how many people who helped fund this game feel the same way. Not cheated necessarily, but it feels like we helped fund a project that didn't really fulfill the promise or really complete the story we started with the previous games.

Oh well I guess...anyone else have any thoughts on the game or does anyone even care?

I was a big fan of shenmue if you remember from a while ago. I think I got through shenmue 2 half way but never completed it. Mainly because I didn't think part 3 would be made.

To me it seems very disappointing that they didn't change the game much to make it more appealing to today's standards. I guess it was just a crowdfunded game so we can't expect 2019 graphics and gameplay.

I'm saddened to hear the story didn't get fleshed out much more either. The world and the story was what drew me into the game. But lately, that formula is quite old now. I may pick it up on Xbox if i could get a deal on it and play through 2 and then 3 but it will probably have to wait.

I watched the GB review last week; one of their guys (Dan, maybe?) was a big fan of the series. To me it's just... weird, but is supposed to be I guess.

Totally not into this type of game anyway but it seemed like most of the reviews ran parallel to yours in that... it's appreciated but doesn't really live up to what people were hoping for.

Yeah basically you have no story then all the sudden a big boss fight at the end and then no closure and you’re like...I waited how long for this and you couldn’t even progress the story?

The characters look bad but the environment is nice. The movement is the same old tank walking as before, the fights are awkward as virtua fighter 1, then you basically have a real life simulator attached to this.

I was hoping they would progress the gameplay a bit. Even a game like Yakuza which draws influence from Shenmue has a better control system. It’s just rooted too deeply in nostalgia and it doesn’t work. This is a game that would have benefitted greatly from more modernization

Yea that sounds horrible. When I heard it was being remade I figured it would be modernized. I played Yakuza 0 and I think that gave me the shenmue fix. Breezed through that game but got to the final boss and couldn't beat him.

Haven't had much time for games due to crazy work. It's too bad a bigger studio could not carry the story forward and end it properly.

The 1st Shenmue was a dud for me. Since then, I never touched the series again.

I do read up on it, but it doesn't sound like there is anything that would interest me.

At the time it was revolutionary. A world that felt real with people going about their lives and stores closing and opening on a schedule. It was the first game where every character was fully voiced. It just didn’t age well. It began as a virtua fighter spinoff for the sega Saturn.
