Looks like the wife is going to have to have a knee replacement. We are dependent on her income, yet she will have to be off work for 6 to 8 weeks. We were trying to save the money to cover the time, but it is difficult, and her knee recently got much worse.

Does anyone know if you can take unemployment during a time like that when you have to be off work?

What about social security disability?

Thanks for any information, I was going to start calling tommorow, but I figured some people would know what was up.

This is what disability is made for. Since she'll be going back to work after the recovery, they shouldn't give you as much hassle.

I found this under social security disability - and it doesn't look good.

My company's extended health plan offers short term disability for up to 17 weeks due to illness or injury. Effectively it provides income while someone is off work.

Ok, her place doesn't offer any insurance other than medical. That is all we have for her.

SD, we'll ask, however - even if they have it - we won't be able to use it for this would be as it would be like buying car insurance after the wreck wouldn't it?

My company has Short term disability 50% out the door, and 66% if i opt for it... something like that... so, she may have it and not know it.

At my company it covers everyone, you don't have to pay or sign up or anything.

She should have an employee handbook that explains the policy, or of course she could talk to HR.

Even if she has short term /long term disability there is usually a waiting period. SSI would not cover this.

Any chance her employer would give her light duty, I think you walk the day of the surgery these days. GL
