At this point, the approval ratings have no real meaning.
the ones that want to look at the polls are those grasping at straws.
He can force through the political appointments; the Dems have shown that they have no valid backbone.
The economy is stable (no matter what the nay-sayers want to happen). Oil prices have some impact, and it may slow down the growth, but not kill it.
The SS reform is not going anywhere; he was unable to make a solid enough case for it.
Iraq is not able to be solved soon; nor will there be a pull out for political sake. The problem will be resolved/clearing up in the next 2-3 years, it will not turn into a Vietnam.
Therefore, what targets Bush may have set for the next few years, are not going to be impacted by the polls.
The polls are also targetting Bush, therefore the Repub leader in '08 (probably in the WH) will not have any of that type of baggage that Bush is having at present.
Because the Dems have originally marched lock step with the Repubs in Congress and have not shown a clear viable alternative, they will have a difficult time gaining control there.
