Shawshank Redemption

what is it about this movie? I can't understand why so many people like it 😕

I've always seen it as a mediocre, feel-good movie that can't hold a candle to the original novella, but it seems like everyone and their mother lists is as one of their favorite movies all time.

anyone want to enlighten me about what makes the movie so appealing?

Great (Story + Acting + Cinematography + Music + Script + Theme) = The Shawshank Redemption
IMHO, of course.

It's one of the best movies I've ever seen. One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest is another one.
Green Mile is really good.
It's cool because it's real and it's human. Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman are a couple of the best actors of our time, that helps.

Edit...
Quite possibly has the worst title of any movie evar.

I liked it quite a bit, but I'm with the OP in that it isn't even close to my favorites. Different strokes I guess.

that's my favorite movie. read the book and you'll like it.

I've read the book 😉 the fact that I've read the book is one of the reasons I don't like the movie. haha.

pissed me off that the movie made him seem innocent, where the book was fairly clear on his guilt (thus allowing for his redemption).

Don't know what it is about Shawshank, but when I run across it on TV, I can't seem to stop watching it, or at least flipping back to it while surfing.
Just a damn good, solid movie.

Makes me feel good for the human race deep down inside?

Because nice guys can finish first?

I dunno, if one ever goes to jail one can only hope the people he meets are like Red, and not the Sisters!

I love that movie, and there's a nother one...hmm...to think of the name...The Last Castle. Another great prison movie.

The last castle should not be mentioned in the same sentence as Shawshank.

yea, not one of my favs, something about the way he escapes that bothers me.

FVCK!! YOU JUST RUINED IT FOR ME, BASTARD!!! :| :| :|

It's quite expected for the main character to escape in a prison movie.

actually, i usually thought there were two main characters in that movie. so i wasn't unsure which one was the biggest role.

Morgan Freeman does a really good job with narration. IMO, he gives the movie a great Cinematographic feel that carries over to the acting and sheer good writing of the story. I mean, when you know for a fact a guy is innocent from the beginning, it puts you on his side from the get-go.
