Eh, I've read a good explanation of i/p that says that interlaced signals are better left interlaced as converting them to progressive just blurs the image. What is needed to make it good is a pulldown type algorithm and that's hard to do properly.

Think about this for a minute, why would they upconvert when they have film available?
Common sense, folks, they're not sitting there with FFDShow & a stack of DVD's.
Discussion of Showtime's HD presentation, including evidence that it is indeed a shiny new transfer
Do your research before you make stupid comments.

Yep, it's a transfer. Shawshank was filmed on film. Therefore it is already high resolution. It can then be transfered to a HD video and broadcast. Most films can transfer very well if the orginal film is in good shape... no matter how old they are.
A perfect and beautiful example of this is the old TV show Hogan's Heroes which was shot on 35mm film instead of modern video tape. Makes for BEAUTIFUL HD transfers and can be seen in HD on HDnet.
In fact, Hogan's Heroes transfered so well you can see just how cheap the sets were made since no one figured TV at the time would show such detail.
