Shaving head: go to a barber, bic it, or get an electric shaver?

Yeah, yeah. I'm going bald.. at 26, no less. So i've pretty much convinced myself that I'm going to shave my head but wonder if I should go to a barber or do myself. When I first starting losing hair, when I was 16, I bic-ed it - grabbed a disposable razor and went for it. Hurt like hell, took what felt like hours, and left my head really sore. Haven't shaved my head since so would like to hear some thoughts. Would getting a pro to do it be a good idea for the first time or should I just lop it all off myself?

I am in your boat brother. I started shaving the dome around 28 or so. Nothing to do about it. I suggest buying your own electric shaver (costco usually carries them) and learning how to do it on your own. I've never bic'd mine.

Sucks, doesn't it? I look much older than I am becuase of the receding hairline - did you feel younger when you shaved your head or just.. even balder?

i have a few really big scars on my head, so when my hair grows it looks all bad with patches that don't grow with it....
i just bought a set of clippers, put on a no.2 or no.4, and go at it in my bathroom for 40 mins :]

Just do it yourself. It's not difficult...takes me only a couple minutes. I don't find electrics do a good job on my head, but then again I don't find they do that good of a job on my face either, so maybe it's just me.

..I've been dome mowing for years. I use the lowest setting on my Norelco 8892XL and get a close cut wit no burns. (costco)..

i've tried rogaine, to no avail. Propecia more effective? My grandfather was bald, my cousin is bald... It's a family thing so I just accepted my fate.

Actually I think I look fine. Usually don't have any problem with the ladies either. It's all about self-confidence, bald or not.

Well, I'm not worried about the ladies, really (for a change).. I just hate little things like going out with (older) Friends and NOT getting carded while they do. Like my 32 year old buddy got carded on friday and the bouncer told me "you're cool man, don't worry about it." I look 40 and I *hate* it.

meh.. you have the maturity of a 12 year old, based on prior threads. I'm not going to bother justifying my existence to some dork who calls himself "mercenary for hire." what do you assassinate? Squirrels in the neighborhood park while listening to Danzig?

i have one of those electric clippers they use in a barber shop. I usually put it on 1/2 (or 1/4 in the summer) and shave it all off. Takes about 10-15 minutes and saves me $15-20/month in haircuts. Paid for itself in 2 shaves! I do go to the barber for a proper haircut if I need to look extra good though.

I use a mach3 on my head every 4 days or so. I always use a brand new razor and I never get a cut. Just go slow until you get the nuances of your dome. Make sure you soak your head for a minute or 2 under the hot water (I shave it in the shower). Use a decent gel shaving cream. Do NOT push to hard..you dont want to shave off a thin layer on your scalp: it takes forever to stop bleeding and leaves a nasty scab. Just go over the spot with slow even strokes and use your fingers to gauge if theres stubble left or not. Kojak.

fobot.com
just use a hair clipper from walmart every couple of weeks
don't use the guard so it'll be short, no need to shave, that is too much work

If your hair is already pretty short you should just go ahead & shave it yourself... if its still long and/or thick you might want to consider hitting the barber for the first time & doing the maintenance yourself.

yeah, going 100% shaven is a big difference from buzzing it. I'm thin in the back and receeding in the front, but I still look okay keeping it at 1/4 inch. I cut it myself every 2 weeks or so.

Buzzing it requires that you do it every couple of weeks, while shaving it bald requires that you do it once a week or more. Keep that in mind.

i used to bic my head and it only took a few minutes, did not hurt, and was easy (only need a wall mirror and a hand mirror). not sure what all the fuss is about.

Ask Britney. :p

Seriously, just use one of those hair cutting/trimming razor kits. If you don't want to do it all at once, use the attachments to get your hair shorter (i.e. crew cut) before you buzz what's left. This way, if you still have second thoughts, you can still stop at the shorter length and go with it for a few days before you make a decision to get rid of it all.
