my battery in my electric shaver is dead. i need to get a new electric shaver... any recommendations on which is best?

when i have time, i prefer to shave with a blade. ive used gillette machs in the past, but ive wanted to do the real thing for a while now (some sort of safety razor or straight blade, brush, real shaving cream.) i read a good article on this a while back that also had recommendations and a link to some nice sets, but have no idea where that is now. any recommendations here?

My 4-year old Braun died a month ago, I went back to blades and hated it. For Christmas Santa brought me a new Braun 8995 - sweetest shave I have ever had.

I use a Norelco 7110X. I paid about $30 at Target when it was on sale. It's much quieter and closer than any other shaver I've used, and it can be rinsed out. Of course, if you can spend more, you can get a better shave, but remember that, with a number of models, a lot of the money you'll spend is on dubious features rather than a better shave. You'll have to compare different models closely to get the best value. I found the reviews at Amazon helpful when I was shopping.

I love Braun shavers. They always do an excellent job. Quick and easy and they dont mess up your skin.
You also dont have to let your beard get accustomed to them, unlike other brands.

Have had a few each of Norelco and Remington. They do an OK job but I was never impressed. Also had some oddball brands. Recommend you avoid those.

Heard that Porshe once made an electric razor, never heard if people liked it or not.

I use a Phillips Body Groom. It cost like $20 and is waterproof and works like a charm.

I also use a Braun, 8585, and I believe I've had it for at least 2, maybe a little over 3 years now. I have no problems with it, and overall quite satisfied with it. The self-cleaning aspect is nice, and it cuts close and fairly quickly. The battery lasts just as long as it did when I first got it too, lots of power/juice. I'd highly recommend mine, and they've updated the newer models even further I believe.

You use it on your face?
First the taint, then the face.

Wet/dry electric, to be used with shaving cream and cleaned with soap and water rinse. E.g. Panasonic.

a. I can't imagine ever getting a close/comfortable enough shave with that thing to use on my face.

b. I bought one about six months ago and it broke within three days.

c. I've been using a Braun 8585 for 3 years or so and the thing is fantastic. I've only replaced the blade/foil once in that time. Highly recommend any of the high end Braun shavers.

I recently got a old-fashioned safety razor (Merkur Classic, ~$30) and 5 blades ($5) and its probably the best shave I've had in a long time I have a pretty tough beard and try to shave once or twice a week only. This razor was able to tackle 4 days worth of growth with no problem, when a Mach 3 gets all clogged up in a stroke or 2.

There is a bit of a learning curve, the first time i managed to nick my upper lip a bunch because the head of the razor is much larger than a mach 3 cartridge, but that hasn't happened since.

I wouldn't necessarily say that the shave is much closer (though I only go 1 pass with the grain) or the "experience" that everybody clamors about, but for 50c/blade who can complain? I can probably go about 10 shaves per blade, so 1 blade per month. Much cheaper than the Mach 3.

I also got a badger hair brush & Proraso shave cream from Target a while back, don't remember how much. One tube has lasted about a year, but then again I don't shave daily. I don't have all the pre-shave/post-shave stuff which brings down the recurring cost to blades + cream.

I've got a Merkur Classic and a Merkur Vision and to me the shave is so much closer. I use he Vision and it's adjustable so I can get a super close shave. I agree though...I don't get the "experience". To me it's shaving ughhh. At first it was fun because the shave was so much better but then that wears off fast and it's normal tedious shaving.

Do you shave with, then against the grain to get a super close shave? I do that when I need a ultra-close smooth shave, but it tends to irritate my face so I don't do it much.

Plus I look better with a bit of scruff anyway.

Yeah 1st is always with the grain. The 2nd is against or it's sideways depending on possible irritation.

I've had a higher-end Braun sitting under my sink for about that long. I took it out recently and tried it again, and confirmed why it was there. The Panasonic wet/dry I've been using with lather shaves closer, is less irritating, easier to clean, and doesn't require consumables.

There are good reasons for using lather, and being water-proof also simplifies cleaning.

Well, I never actually 'shave' - I just buzz it down with the trimmer bit.

I'm using a Braun 75xx model, about 3 years old actually. I think it's been replaced by the 85xx series now. This thing works great and is much better than the norelco I used to have. The battery life has dropped a little, but still lasts me for over a week on a single charge.
