Sharpton: Griffin Dropped for Dropping N-Bomb

Must give the organizers respect - why is it that white comics can't say a certain word that black comics can? I applaud the tossing. Discuss!

Eddie Griffin thought he'd shock the swells at a big Black Enterprise event over the weekend by littering his act with N-words, but the comic was the one who got the real jolt when the mag's owner gonged his routine, and tossed him off the stage!

Rev. Al Sharpton tells TMZ that Griffin took the stage as the headliner and did his best Michael Richards impression, blistering the mostly African-American crowd with a barrage of N-bombs, and wailing, "Why are some black leaders telling us to stop using the N word?"
Griffin's mike was promptly cut, and Black Enterprise owner/publisher Earl Graves stomped on stage and proclaimed, "We ... will not allow our culture to go backwards ... We will pay Mr. Griffin all that we owe him but we will not allow him to finish the show if that's the way he's going to talk." Oh, snap!

The crowd gave Graves a standing ovation -- and Rev. Al, speaking the next day at the event, gave Graves props for his axing of Griffin. A rep for Griffin had no comment.

I'm glad they stepped in if they felt it inappropriate, but what did they expect? Had they never heard his comedy before?

Maybe the organizers did and Mr. Graves did not? Maybe they had a talk with him, explaining to be a bit tamer since this was an industry event not a seedy club? Maybe he's an idiot and should have known better?

Seriously, if Howard Stern was invited to a Jewish heritage event, I'm sure he'd tone down his normal act and be respectful.

A great example is Jamie Fox - when he's doing a comedy appearance he's a foul mouthed guy (as he should be), when he's at something a bit more formal he's a class act.

Jamie Foxx spoke out in defense of Michael Vick.

Yeah, he's a real class act.

Yeah, he's a real class act.

I'm not talking about his daily life, he could have a basement full of asian slaves for all I know - I'm just saying he knows how to behave when he's out in the public.

Either that, or maybe they had a feeling he might use the word rather profusely in his act, and Mr. Graves saw it as an opportunity to "stand firm" in his denigration of the practice of its use?

Umm, doesn't something like this belong in the P&N forum before it becomes the flame fest we all know it will be? (and so it can mature to an unimaginable flame fest after it gets there :D)

hA, I actually think his use of the word is offensive just because his act is unfunny/pointless. Chris Rock, Dave Chapelle, even Eddie Murphy can drop all the f or n-bombs as they went, their comedy is relevent and.. Yes.. FUNNY. Griffin's just a hack, a funny looking guy who has a career because he's funny looking, not funny.

Mr. Graves bio - Impressive enough that I don't think he needs the publicity of a little spat with a washed up has been. Graves has more money than he probably has use for and his publication, like himself, is well respected.

It's on the blocked word list anyway. ;)

He reminds me of James Earl Jones from the 70s. Funktastic!

So then what's the point of having black guy avatars if you're not allowed to type out the n-word???? ;)

Anyhoo, as long as you can still say "Hoe Fo' Sho'", it's all good.

Hey, I agree with you. I'm not standing up for censorship, but I think some hurtful terms - n*gger, fa**ot, etc. should be used with responsibility and restraint. Just throwing it around might make things a bit numbing, in a terrible way. Say the words, but not to the point where they lose their shock value.

It's complicated, on the one hand I loathe censorship on the other hand I understand how the audience, highly educated african americans who were young during the civil rights movement, have a far less pleasant/jovial relationship with the word n*gger than kids raised on Akon and NWA.

P.S. I like NWA.

Ha,there's a 20 year gap between the popularity of NWA and Akon. But I get your point. It's just hilarious that you picked those two artists to make it.

This is not censorship. This is an organization taking a stand and refusing to be associated with what he was saying. He's free to go out on the street and say what he wants, but they paid him to come and speak and they felt he was representing him poorly and they put a stop to that.

When the founding fathers gave us the right to free speech, it was with the intention that the people, not the government, would TALK BACK and say "what you're saying is not right" when people say hateful things, and that's exactly what happened here.
