Sharpening a knife on a sharpening block?
What is the proper technique? Which way do you rub the knife over and stuff...

What kind of sharpener are you using? And does it have an instruction manual? Just wondering. But the method changes if you are using an automatica sharpener, or a sharpening block, or rod...
Tas.

EDIT: Also, what style of knife are you trying to sharpen, and what kind of blade does it have?

Its just a simple lockback pocket knife my gf gave me a while back. My roomate has this white block of stuff that sharpens knives, i guess he just rubs the knife on it. I tryed rubbing it away from the edge of the blade, it gets sharper, but still not like a hot knife thru butter or anything...

if it is a block you push the knife on the block towards the blade so watch out for your hands and fingers as this can cut you, try not holding the block in your hand place it on a surface. The angle will depend on your knife and the sharpness you want for the application but standad it i think 40°? some blocks even come with a plastic angle guide. then sharpen as if you are trying to slice layers of the block off (push the edge down the block and pull sideways liek you would cutting bread or steak)
