Sharpen video with LCD?

Fabio

Senior member
I just purchased a new Benq 19 inch LCD monitor. The text appears to be a little blurry. I have tried adjusting the picture with the monitor settings but it dies not make much of a difference. Is there somewhere in XP where I can make the picturer sharper? The monitor does have a DVI in but unfortunately I have an AIW 9600xt that does not have a DVI out.

Thanks,

Fabio

Windows XP has a feature called "Clear Type" designed for exactly this purpose -- to sharpen up text with LCD monitors. It's off by default -- you have to turn it on. Where/how? I don't know, as I don't have XP yet, but someone on here will know and post an answer very shortly, I'd guess. Or just go to your Help menu on your computer and type in "Clear Type." Should be able to find out all about it rather quickly.

This is all assuming, of course, that nothing is physically wrong (defective) with the monitor or vid card and all your settings are okay. Everything else look okay? Web page images, pictures, etc.?

Also, as Wobble is probably alluding to, running LCDs at anything other than their native resolution can adversely affect the image quality. Running it either at native res or the next closest res is recommended, I believe. Hope this helps. 🙂

LOL talking about this on another post. LCD text will look blury if you are used to a CRT. Use your LCD at its native resolution for best results. Also use DVI. You will get use to the blurry text until you jump back on a CRT lol. LCD's are a heck-of-a-lot easier on your eyes and you will notice that!

I thought clear type was only for DVI???

I know that clear type uses sub pixels to make the text look sharper, but isn't that a digital feature? Hense, the need for DVI?

Hmmm .... Could be. As I said, I don't have XP myself. I just knew that Clear Type existed, and what it was designed for, so thought I'd mention it. Not sure why the video signal would need to be digital to turn sub-pixels on or off though; but maybe it does.

Anyone know for certain?

I'd highly recommend running the LCD at the native resolution of 1280x1024. Unlike CRTs, LCDs have actual physical dots for each pixel. When you run at a resolution like 1024x768, you stretch a pixel, making it look blurry.

ClearText is not a DVI only feature. In fact, you can even turn it on with a CRT monitor. Think of it as anti-aliasing for text 🙂

Using DVI where possible and native res with quality cable(I`m using Belkin DVI cable) gives best results,as to LCD text,my Samsung 191T text is sharper then my 21" Samsung SM1100DF CRT.

Bottom line is you`ll lose sharpness when you are not in native res at full screen size.
