I love these beast vs. beast videos. I liked that Lion vs. Hyena one as well. To be fair to the sharks, that was an enormous octopus, and a relatively small shark. Still fascinating to watch, though.

Anyone know where there's more videos like these? (animal vs. animal)

Ya that's what I thought, I was hoping the shark would be a little bigger, which might have made for a more epic battle. Alas... that shark got WTFPWNT.

woa.. I believe sharks can't breath if they can't move, so the octopus just held it 'till it "ran out of breath" :Q that's sweet hehe.

That's only some sharks. Many of the reef sharks (white tip reef, nurse, zebra, leopard, bamboo, etc...) can pump their gills just like fish.

how did the octopus kill the shark?

Could be one of many ways. I couldn't quite tell from the vid what kind of shark that was, but many will die very quickly from stress. The octo would be plenty strong enough to crush or snap the shark in some way. Its skin could envelope the sharks head and gills, thus suffocating it, and their beaks are very sharp/powerful and it could have simply eaten it alive.

that was the discovery channel video... octpus ate a bunch of shark before someone tape it to find out who's killing

Squaliforms are not very strong so this is no surprise here. You will never see an octopus attempt this on a requiem.

That's not an automatic defense...at least not for that animal. In most cases for lower vertebrates and invertebrates (especially aquatic), that I've seen, the first defense is to try to struggle/run. After which they've tired themselves too much to try any offensive-defense. Besides, it can't do much when the octo has its tentacle around the shark's jaw, keeping it shut.

Sharks can get sick. However, they're famously resistant to cancer...it just doesn't occur in them. So they and their immune systems are involved in a lot of cancer research.
