About time. If the sharks were grown in a sustainable way, sure why not. The fact is that shark fin soup and growing wealth of China is contributing to the decline of shark populations. There is nothing wrong about taking measures to prevent an ecological catastrophe, even if the practice being outlawed is steeped in tradition.

*facepalm*

the mexicans who make birria (goat) don't cut off the goat's legs and throw the goat back into the wild.

So you wouldn't have any problem with shark fin soup if they used the rest of the shark for pet food?

there is no reason to eat an apex predator--not any predator.

such a practice is the apex of idiocy.

fine, lose all of the rest of your food supply if you want. fucking morons.

You people need to understand banning shark fin =/= banning shark meat.

because of the high demand and profit for shark fin, fisherman kills the whole shark to just get the fin. And the whole shark produce little shark fin good for few servings only. ~40 million sharks are killed a year just for their fin.

And Chinese people eat Shark Fin for status symbol. It doesn't have taste by itself. The taste come from all the ingredients cooked together with the shark fin. Shark fin doesn't provide specific nutrition. It's only good for some rich dude showing off to his friends and associates that he can afford to serve shark fin soup.

Shark Fin should be banned not in just California, but all over the world.

I agree totally, the shark fishing industry is pathetic and it has a domino effect throughout the marine ecosystems in which shark play the apex predatory role, keeping gene lines healthy in lower order creatures.........the impact of the removal of sharks isn't being accounted for on other more depended upon food fishes.
Total and worldwide ban for the sharkfin trade, which is same problem as ivory, pangolins, tigers penis and bears bile!!!!
The Chinese need to start looking at their environmental impacts- the un needs to start sorting them out now.

Are all sharks endangered? Nope, so are their fins exempt from this law?
There are concerns that given shark's low rate of reproduction and the high rate they are being caught now for their shark fins, that some shark species may be in severe trouble before they even get listed, especially given our poor data on their historical and current populations.

Even more problematically, its basically impossible to visually distinguish fins from many shark species designated threatened or endangered from those that are currently not when we're talking about the dried shark fins that are typically brought into the US for shark fin soup. A regular genetic testing regime of sufficient sensitivity to catch any violators is simply not practical. (Especially given the realistic practices of some of the Chinese importers.)

We do have confirmation that endangered and threatened species are already being served, including in the US.

i would have significantly less issue with it yes (as long as they weren't hunting endangered species)

"Opponents countered that no species of shark is listed as endangered in the United States and that such a ban is a slap at the state's 1.1 million Chinese-Americans for whom the pricey delicacy is a traditional accompaniment to special occasions like weddings."

http://news.yahoo.com/california-shark-fin-ban-signed-law-000841068.html

It's a cultural/racist ban on a traditional food, there are many ways they could have passed more reasonable laws that would have kept it available to people, they didn't.

The whole point of the law is to make it unavailable. Why does culture come into this? You don't see cannibals complaining about the current laws, do you?

Truth be told, though, it doesn't mean much to me if species go extinct or not.

Go back to reading your bible...

Sharks are very important in the ocean ecosystem. Like most top predators, sharks feed on the sick and weak, thereby keeping the schools of fish on which they feed healthy. Lions and tigers serve the same role in their respective ecosystems, removing the weaker animals from the herds, and keeping the gene pool strong. Although it has long been said "The only good shark is a dead one," sharks have a very important role in the ocean ecosystem, and they most certainly are not better off dead. Believe it or not, we need sharks in the oceans.

Shark populations are dwindling due to heavy commercial fishing and the general attitude that they are nothing more than a nuisance. This shortsighted view of the ocean ecosystem is dangerous--a shortage of sharks could be disastrous to the health of ocean food chains, including but certainly not limited to the ones we rely upon for food resources. We humans are already placing enough strain on these food chains as it is, without adding the shark to the equation. We must respect these animals and give them the space they need to live. Sharks really are beautiful animals...once you get to know them.

What does anything he say have to do with the bible? We out-evolved them you twit. Well, most of us did. :sneaky:

This is the opponents simply outright lying.

For instance the Great hammerhead is listed as endangered in the Western Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico, including US waters.

Hammerhead sharks species are also considered endangered in areas of the Pacific including California waters.

The reality is the proposed alternatives simply are not going to plausibly truly work, because legitimate sources would give restaurants and caterers the cover for bringing in the illegally imported cheaper shark fins from foreign sources. They could even have documentation seemingly proving the shark fins are from legitimate sources. (This could even involve a caterer buying just enough shark fin from a legal source to serve at a banquet to show inspectors if they show up and check, but secretly then buy thousands of shark fins from illegal sources which is truly what they actually end up serving in their shark fin soup.)

ditto. chinese people tend to have this unthinking tendency to favor tradition, and it's part of the problem holding them back. ignorant traditions and beliefs should be abandoned, not cherished. ban it all

Eh? I mean I know it's cruel, but there's a reason we pay up the ass for Shark Fin Soup. As a foodie it's something I don't eat very often. Maybe once a year at those Chinese banquets? But seriously food is food. If you want to go vegetarian, that's YOUR choice.

What's next? Banning cows?

/rage

So chopping a small part of an apex predator and leaving it to die under the guise of "its food" is enough for you? Humans are so fcking stupid and self centered. I'd love some soylent green, its food....

Agree, sharks fin is pretty damn gross.
The only reason any one eats it is to show off to to other people that theyve got money to burn.
