Sharing Violation: Is there a way to find out what application or process is using the file?

That's funny because I experienced some problems regarding AVI files that had a similar error. It said that I couldn't delete the file bec. it was used by another process. The thing was when I shutdown the computer and restarted it would say the same thing even though I do not have any AVI editor or player running. I had to do a Safe Mode w/ command prompt to delete it.

It's on a network drive, so no safe mode deletes for me.

Basically I installed Opera on a network drive here at work, and even though I have full permissions on the network drive I can't delete the empty directory with no files in it. This is in spite of the fact that I uninstalled Opera. 😕

There's an open hook to the directory somewhere. Netwatch may help. I think you'd have to find it in the NT4 Resource Kit. I use a tool at work called Hyena which is very powerful and gives me a readout of where open files and sessions are. You may consider downloading the demo of it and give it a whirl. Hint: Click on the download link, but don't put your info in the form. The download will start and you don't have to put any info in. You can get a 30-day trial and don't have to worry about spam mail or sales people calling you.

how long have you been using hyena Jzero? we need a tool like that at work and somebody mentioned it the other day

i will have to try it out/get the boss to spring for it

I have been using it for over a year. I actually need to renew my maintenance contract and convince the boss to buy a couple more licenses. It is seriously "freaking awesome."

Why?
Very powerful. It allows central management of literally everything. Even allows you to interact with some of your unix stuff. You can manage computer accounts, user accounts, it integrates with Exchange, it even now integrates with VNC. Manage group policy and Active Directory. It allows you to generate reports, make batch changes to groups of users or computers....
It does everything you could ever want it to do and then some, but from one extremely convenient location (although admittedly MMC cuts into its utility - in NT4 you had to have 5 separate tools like User Manager/Domains, Server Manager, etc) but it does things that mmc doesn't do, as well. For instance, I use it to generate a report a weekly report of machines that do not have AV software installed so that I can catch any that slip through the cracks and go into circulation.

Support is astounding. I always get an e-mail back within 24 hours, almost always from the same person. They offer a number of free tools in addition to Hyena that provide any functionality that Hyena happens to miss. Within the last year there have been like 5 point releases all providing more and more extra functionality, and this is available for free throughout the maintenance period.

Man, Systemtools should pay me a kickback for this post 😀
Seriously, it's a great piece of software. Try the demo out and I'd be willing to be that when the 30 days expires, you'll go back to MMC or Server Tools and you'll feel like it takes you forever to do a simple task 🙂

cool, thanks for the info (sorry about the thread hi-jack N8Magic 😱 )

i will try it out 🙂
