Sharing under XP

I remember under windows98, there was an option to share a single folder and to put a password on that specific folder only.

It seems like sharing a folder under XP has become more complicated.

I live in a dorm and I want to share files exclusively with my friends but not everyone else.

I did some search under xp sharing, but all that seems complicated.

I dont want to keep adding users and changing their status.

Is there a way to share a folder like windows 98 using windows XP, using just folder and a password?

you can just create a universal login for your select users and cross your fingers that they dont give it out...which will inevitably happen

home or professional?

if you have professional:

windows explorer>tools>folder options>view tab>uncheck last box "use simple file sharing"

this will allow more control over permissions versus the default dumbed down version, which i think is more complex heh. then just right click the folder you want to share and go to sharing and security. in the sharing tab, you can add the universal login by clicking on permissions.

if you have home:

there's actually no way but to conform with ms and use their "simple" file sharing method.
for an added obstacle for unwanted users, you can share the folder as a hidden share by adding a $ sign at the end of the share name. this will help prevent the share from being seen in network neighborhood/network places. then just have your friends map the share for easier access.

edit: er..sorry, if you're using xp with ntfs...you'll have to add your friends individual logins to authenticate. it's late (early?)
