I have two desktops: one with Ubuntu 12.04 and another one with Windows 7. I want to be able to control the Ubuntu machine from the Win 7 machine. I know Ubuntu comes with a desktop sharing tool. Is that the best/safest option? or is there a better option. I want to control the Ubuntu machine ONLY from the Win7 machine in the same network, NOT via the internet, unless doing so won't create security issues..

Thanks.

Once you've got it working, there are some tweaks to the sshd_config file you can do so that it will only accept connections from your Win7 computer. You can also make a firewall rule to this end.

samba-server is used for creating windows accessable network shares. Some gui tools exist in linux for configuring it but IMO none of them do a very good job of exposing all of the options you get from editing the config file.
