sharing two LANs over the internet

My friend and I both have linksys cable/dsl routers. We want to share our local networks with each other, but when we set up a static route it doesn't seem to work. The packets never get more than 3 hops out of our networks. We set the DHCP up on each network to ensure we don't have any duplicate IPs. Anyone ever tried this?

I'm not clear about the details, but you'll probably have to setup a VPN (virtual privte network) between your two networks.
