Sharing printer in W2k Server, how can WinXP clients print to it?

Confused

Elite Member
I did have WindowsXP on my "server" but have now got Windows 2000 Server (running web server and needed the extra number of TCP/IP connections in 2k Server over XP Pro) and am using this machine to share the printer on my network at home.

In WinXP it would work with the other XP machines, but since i put 2k on, whenever i try to add the network printer on any of the XP clients, it will not find the printer when browsing for it, or when i try to just type in the printer name.

How do i install WinXP drivers for the printer (HP Deskjet 710C) or at least get the XP to see it!?

Thanks in advance

Did you install Active Directory on the Server?

If so, you need to list it to AD for it to be seen easily.

Log on to the computer with Administrator Privileges
Click Start\Settings, then click Printers.
In the Printers folder, right-click the printer that you want to publish in Active Directory, and then click Properties.
Click the Sharing\Share As, then type a share name or accept the default name.
Click to select the List in the Directory check box, and then OK.
Close the Printers folder.

Also make sure that the clients have sufficient rights to the share (ie. Users, Everybody, etc...)

Nope, didn't install Active Directory

I'm just startin to learn W2k Server, and from what i've seen on other servers, AD is a little too "in deep" for me at the moment!

All i wanna do is get the XP machines printing! 🙂

Hmmm I don't know why they can't print. I have a Win2k Server with WinXP printing from it just fine.

Go to the Printers folder and go to Add New Printer. Make sure you choose Network Printer and not Local Printer. You may not be able to browse to the printer since you don't have AD installed. Choose Connect to this printer (the second choice) and type \\SERVERNAME\SHARENAME. That should add it to your computer. If not then the printer must not be shared.

Well, did this again, and it has seemed to work, without needing AD!
