Sharing NT 4.0 Network

Greetings from soggy Miami.

Our school has a computer lab with 31 network "drops," and 30 PC's. The problem is that most of our classes have more than 30 students. The lab is part of a larger NT 4.0 network.

I'd like to install 4 more PC's in the lab, but there are no more drops. I was thinking of installing a 4 port wired cable/dsl router (there's one on sale for $10 this week) and connecting the 4 new PC's to the router. Would this work? Is there a better solution.

Thanks alot.

yes it would work but personally id get a switch in there instead. as with the router youll have to tunr alot of stuff off a bit of agg really.

If you are not the responsible network administrator you should also notify them that you are doing that because they may have VLAN's setup to allow only certain PC on the network or other security measures.

Last thing you want is your good intentions backfiring.

Also along what Fuzznuts said you don't want to be adding on additional network services such as DHCP server to your network by adding a router because that would cause more havoc if not turned off so be cautious.

A switch should work for you as long as there are no security measures in place to add such a device and additional machine.
