it's been done before and i know others that have done it... but what's the deal with pluging in ethernet connection to a port in the hub and letting other users just jack into other ports. seems to work with 2 maybe 3 computers, but not well by any stretch of the imagination. how does this work and how do they "cooperate"

Assuming all the clients were set for dhcp, it would depend on how many ip's your isp let you have at once. Most isps will only allow you to lease one IP at a time so thats why it doesn't work too well. But for example if you paid your cable company for 3 ips, you could plug your cable modem into a hub/switch and plug 3 computers into it.

i'm not sure how many ip addresses our isp (verizon) initially gave us as i was not the person to order it but we use to have 3 comps running on one dsl line with a hub. i think we're only suppose to receive one ip but they might not be monitoring their networks that strict and letting us slide with 3 ip's. i was able to pick up a router the other day for $10 (compusa MIR deal) and now have the network running through it. it's cool how i can restrict access to the other comps as well as block things they shouldnt access. it also makes it simpiler to run lan games as all comps are on the same network.
