I have a pretty weird setup here, so it may take a bit to explain. I'd really appreciate the help, though 🙂.
I have a Buffalo TeraStation NAS unit hooked up to my NIC of my PC, and set a static IP. This way, I don't need a gigabit router, as it's hooked up to a gigabit NIC. Everything works fine, and I have it set as a network drive (it's mapped). I can access it fine. Now, I have a HTPC in the living room one flight above. I would like to be able to access data on this drive from the living room.
I am able to access my actual computer, including all of it's files, by going to My Network Places, and choosing my computer (\\slcentral-pc). My TeraStation, however (which I can access from my downstairs computer using \\terastation), does not work. And I cannot figure out for the life of me how to get it recognized by the other computers in the house.
Do you NEED a router for this? Can I not simply hook it up to my NIC? By the way, the PC in the basement is connected to a 802.11g router using a USB 802.11g card. I am able to stream DVD's from the computer to the living room, but the reason I purchased the TeraStation is for extra space to store and stream DVD's.
Anyone have any ideas?
