i need the internet im my room, but the only computer with the interent is my moms. her computer has 98se, my computer is xp pro. we have a network setup i just need to know how to share a dial-up connection so that i can get registered with steam to play half-life. ive tried a lot of sites but cant find any for a computer with 98 to share with xp, its always the other way around. i have a router and network between the computers that works fine i just need to know how to share the connection. please help

that didnt work, i have to have the router because there is another xp machine on the network as well, but i dont care about it having the internet. i did all the stuff in the guide and it doesnt work. does anyone know of a guide to share and internet connection between an 98se computer and a xp computer with the 98se machine being connected to the internet.

if i cant get the connection to share, being this is only temporary, can i take the modem out of the 98 machine and put it in the xp machine and then setup a connection there, download and get hl working and then just put it back into the 98 machine and everything will be fine

how hard would it be to take out the modem put it in the xp machine and setup a connection to the internet. what steps would i have to take to do this.

It will easier to buy for $10 a new modem and install it on your computer and leave your Mom computer intact.

look at Newegg there are modems even for less than $10.

XP will detect the modem and the New Connection Wizard will launch and guide you through the process.

If it doesn't, launch it yourself from the Accessories > Communications menu. You may need to copy down some settings from your mothers machine and will need her login ID and password.

my dads gonna borrow one from where he works and ill just use it for a day. will there be any problems know that there will be two computers connected to the internet or should i just disconnect my moms and use her username and password and stuff. and does anyone know how big this stuff is for half-life, the game was 5 dics so it cant be that big... could it?

In order to use the two Modems at the same time.

1. Each modem needs its own Tel. line.

2. Your ISP contract allows two independent Logons.

so if i get the modem in the xp machine and then unplug my moms computer and plug in the xp machine and use my moms id then it will work fine

do i have to do anything special to set up the internet connection, im just going to take the other computer off the line and put on mine, so what all will i have to do to set it up?

One thing to keep in mind about steam. On a dialup connection it will take a while to download the game info. If you happen to have a friend with broadband connection and a cd burner.

Have that friend download the file below. It's 740 megs big and it includes: Counter Strike, Day of Defeat, Opposing Force, Deathmatch Classic, Team Fortress Classic, and Ricochet. Those are included with in that file. Course you will need to register steam and have a working cd key.

If you get that file I listed. Other then register it and have a working CD-KEY. Then only thing you really got to download on your dialup connection then. Will be the maps the server is playing. Maybe some sounds or models depending on the mod and server.

Bottom line, if you can get a friend to download that file for you. That will save you alot of download time.
