Sharing Internet Connection in Win98 question.

I just built a new pc where for now both have win98 2ed and one has a cable modem connection.
I tried to use the Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) that's built into W98 2ed. It didn't take. I have ZoneAlarm but I shut that down before installation to keep it simple.

I'm wondering if ICS is only for browsing. Can it be used for other programs like Napster?

If so, then how the heck do I set it up. If not then what do I need to do to do that?
My ISP will provide me another IP for a small monthly fee and I may do that since I already have a hub. I'd just like to know what I'm doing wrong.

Maybe I should post this in the Network forum if it can't be done with W98's built in features.
Thanks

I have ICS up and running and it does everything an internet connection would (for ex..run games, napster, browser, ect...)

I have a setup very similar to yours with a hub and 2 network cards in my "server" and 1 in my "client". After you have everything working, install ICS then check your network information. You should see:

Internet Connection Sharing
TCP/IP(home)-> (Your network adapter you use for network)
TCP/IP(shared)-> (Your network adapter you use for internet connection, should be connected to your cable modem)
TCP/IP->Internet Connection Sharing

If you dont see this then ICS didnt install correctly and you'll have to do it again. To uninstall ICS, make sure you go to add/remove programs, windows setup, and uncheck ICS...otherwise ICS might mess up and you'll never get it running correctly unless you reformat. If you do however, see that stuff, go to run and type in "winipcfg" without the quotes. Make sure your network card for your network is showing and there is an ICSHARE adapter (this is your internet network adapter). Once you click that option, click more info and make sure there is a check at IP Routing Enabled.

If everything is all set and you have an IP address under the ICSHARE adapter, then you are all set. Just check to make sure that under Internet Explorer>Internet Options>Tools>Connections>Lan Settings that there ARE NO CHECKS. Also, you should see a new button called Sharing. Make sure everything is set up right and ICS is set to enabled. Hoped this helps and have fun 🙂

Yes, it's called port forwarding. Try searching Windows Help for "Configure Internet Connection Sharing for applications." Basically, you go to settings and add applications so that an application can access something specific on the internet and add services for servers that you want outside users from the internet to be able to access on your LAN.

My ISP will provide me another IP for a small monthly fee and I may do that since I already have a hub.

This is easily the simplest and cheapest solution.

Another solution to look into is getting a cable/dsl router (linksys, netgear, smc, and other companies make them); they are easy to set up and do the same things as ICS, require only one IP from your ISP, and don't require that one computer be left on all the time to share the connection. They run around $100US and up.
