Sharing files between Mac and Ubuntu

I have an iBook (Mac OS X) and a Thinkpad running Ubuntu, sharing a cable connection with a D-Link 624 router. I would like to be able to share files between the two laptops, can someone point me in the right direction on how I would go about doing this? Any info would be appreciated.

What are the advantages of using Samba? So far I got the FTP working and now looking up on some info on Samba.

samba works with windows and other OS's as well. it is well supported and documented. It is easier to work with than nfs, IMO.
