I have 3 computers hooked up to a router and i want to set it up so i can share files between the computers. Each computer has a differnt OS, one has Xp, another 2000, and the other 98. i downloaded linux files on the 98 computer and want to be able to get them on the XP computer so i can burn them because the 98 computer doesnt have a burner. Its an older computer so right now im just using it to download stuff and for Adobe photoshop. I do all my homework and burning on the xp one. I made a shared folder on the 98 pc but i cant access it from the XP pc. What am i doing wrong here? I just want to be able to transfer the files from the 98 pc to the xp one. Is there a better, easier way to do this?

You need to make all the computers part of the same workgroup. The easiest way to do it is use the Wizard in Windows XP and have it make disks for you to take to the other computers to configure them.

I don't think you do.

How else will the computers be able to identify one another?

*EDIT* You don't NEED need to... but it's the easiest way. Alternatively you could use crossover cable for a simple peer to peer connection, or you could install IIS on the XP system and run a FTP server, or you could set up a domain... none of which are as easy as putting them all on the same workgroup.

if i goto network neighborhood/entire network/microsoft windows network/ then click on computer it says "it is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out it you have access permissions. The network path was not found".

That's the message you get when the computers can't identify one another because they're not on the same workgroup or domain or the proper permissions haven't been set. Use the Wizard on XP to create configuration disks and it'll take care of all of that.

To start the Network Setup Wizard, click Start, click Control Panel, click Network and Internet Connections, and then click Network Connections. Under Common Tasks, click Network Setup Wizard.

Damn... links didn't work... try this. Sounds like the last two steps listed there are the ones you need to follow.

You don't need a crossover cable, domain, workgroup, or IIS. :)

I said nothing about these things making filesharing not work, I just said it wasn't required. ;)

Piss off... every time I try to help someone here it reminds me why I usually stick to off topic... everyone wants to debate about fu*king semantics rather than actually help someone. Hope n0cmonkey can help you, Marinski, cause I'm done wasting my time here.

Maybe its the router i dont know. I need to do some more research on this. thanks for the help though.

Can you access it from the 2k machine?
If you go to the run dialogue and try \\Windows_98_IP_address\share\name does it work?
Are you using the same username/password on each machine?

haven't tryed the 2k pc, dont really use it anyways. Tryed everything else and get the same ******. User names are the same for both pc's. After i set up the network on the 98 pc theres a little icon in the lower right corner that says internet gateway:connected. I need to read up some more.

Anything in event viewer on the XP machine? Have you tried creating a share on the XP machine and pushing the file to it?

In the time it takes you to sort this out, you can probably download the whole distro again directly to the XP machine. Proper file-sharing between 9X machines and NT machines is certainly possible, but it usually ends up being a PITA to configure. The whole business is really ugly to look at.

Yes, but its irritating me and i want to figure out why its not working right. Plus i'd rather not use the XP machine for downloading stuff. I just use it for school work, reading email, etc. The 98 one i want to use just for downloading so if i catch a virus i can just wipe it out.

a few things in event viewer: there was a warning, source is MrxSmb, it says "the redirector failed to determine the connection type" Then a little bit after that theres an error, source is MrxSmb, it says " The master browser has recieved a server announcement from the computer TESTBENCH that believes that it is the master browser for the domain on transport NetBT_Tcpip_{CB10ABF-5545-400. The master brower is stopping or an election is being forced." (TESTBENCH is the 98 PC) I enabled sharing on the XP pc, got on the 98 pc and when i click on entire network it says "Unable to browse network, The network is not accessible, for more info use Help"
