Do u need a "router" to share DSL connections between two computers? I have a small network set up and i can share my netzero and dialup connections through my LAN. I just got DSL and i hear people talking about routers to share a connection. Can't you just install sygate to share the connection

Yes you can but there are several disadvantages, the main being that you always have to have a computer on which is not a problem if you have a dedicated server.

i personally have used MS ICS (built into win ME and win98SE ...) for my DSL line ... and then my cable line when i got rid of dsl ...

and it works good .... i only have 2 systems on it (howeever there were 4 on it for a while when my brother and sister had their systems hooked up) and everything ran beautifully ...

a router would be great if you dont like to leave machines on 24/7 ... but if you have only like 2 boxes or 3 boxes ... i dont think a router is at all necessary ...

routers are nice because they are esier to configure to run servers from different ports on different boxes ... but usually that is unnecessary for most people ...

Go to Freesco, they can show you how to build an inexpensive router for DSL, DIAL UP, Cable. You can just hook a switch/hub to the DSL router, but then you run the risk with an always on connection of bein hacked. The freesco router/firewall program is an excellent system. Runs on as little as a 386, 8mb of ram and a floppy.
