Greetings.

I am planning on moving in with someone who is already running a pppoe based dsl service on their desktop. I was woundering which meathod would be the most suitable for simply shareing the internet connection. We both have the external modems required by the broadband service.

will we have to pay up for a router?

what about network cards?

im not sure about his system, but mine has an asus a7v8x mobo w/ onboard broadcom lan would i still need a network card for any reason?

im completly lost ;(

ramulack, sounds like all you'd need to get is a broadband router. The onboard Broadcom Ethernet on your motherboard will work just fine. I'm assuming your friend already has a network card in his computer. If he's using the DSL connection using a USB connection and doesn't already have a network card, he'll need to buy one.

Keep in mind that you'll only be using one of those DSL modems, not both. You'll plug the phone line into the DSL modem, plug the DSL modem into the Internet Ethernet port on the router, and then plug the two computers into the router. Most likely you'll then need to tell the router the user ID and password for the DSL account.

Once you get the router, your friend will want to uninstall any software he installed to connect to the DSL service. He won't need it anymore. The router makes the connection for you.
