Sharing drives across a router

I'm having a little bit of difficulty sharing files between my two systems which are connected via a router which links them to internet access. I shared the C & D drives on the laptop and the C drive on the desktop but I want each machine to have complete and total access to all files and folders on either machine. For some reason when I try to access certain folders I get an access denied error, you may not have proper permissions to access this folder, blah blah blah. How do I correct this so that each machine has total access to all files?

Did you set it up manually or did you run the Network setup wizard.

Run the wixard if you havent and select simple sharing.
