Sharing Contacts in Outlook over a network

I am attempting to share all the contacts on a network at my work. Each computer has Microsoft Outlook installed on it. I am planning on storing all the contacts on file on the file server. I have created a shared folder by doing this: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;222056

I made it so that the .pst file(where i will be storing all the contacts on the server) can be accessed from the network. My problem is that it can only be accessed one computer at a time. I will try to bring it up in outlook on another computer while it is open already, and it will not allow me to. Any solutions?

...or should I not be using outlook for this?? I am planning on sharing a calendar also throughout the network. Should I be using another program? Thanks

Install MS Exchange on your file server. This will allow sharing of public folders and give everyone access to these resources, etc.

Cheers!

At my old job, I set up Net folders which worked okay for a while. The bad thing is that it doesn't push out the updated contacts/calendar automatically. I think the fastest interval you can set it to is like two minutes. Give it a shot.

Net folders

Hope this helps.

Net folders has a tendency to self-destruct after a couple months of use, I've noticed. Also, it isn't available in versions of outlook after 2000.

In a past thread on the same topic, a user recommended WorkgroupShare, which I haven't had the occasion to play with, but looks very cool.

Of course, setting up an exchange server, while more expensive, is the preferred solution and will offer many, many more benefits (and headaches depending on who you talk to 😉).
