Sharing Between Vista and XP Pro

Hi I just registered here because I know there's some network geniuses on anandtech hehe. I build my own PC's for fun but have never mastered networking.

Ok, so I'm trying to setup a program which runs on my smaller PC (runs XP Pro x86) which can connect to my main gaming rig (runs Vista x64), from now on I'm calling the small one "small" and my main rig "main."

I've gone through all the usual steps on both systems:

1) Firewall off
2) uac off on main
3) admin accounts on both system as well as guest accts on
4) simple sharing disabled on small
5) Both are connected to wired router, both IP's are 192.168.1.x (ie x=5 for small and 3 for main)
6) Local control setup via admin tools security options
7)All users full control in sharing/security
8)both systems are under WORKGROUP

And the really annoying this is: some folders and files share no problems!!! ARGGH! My printer is connected to main and it shares with small and also my wife's laptop - zero issues....

I tried accessing test files from small on main - no joy. I tried the reverse - no joy. On small I get the usual annoying "you might not have permission" blah blah blah. On main "Windows cannot access...check the spelling of the name..."

Any guru's out there??? How can small see random files on main but main cannot access any files on small

HELP??

p.s. I already set the reg key to 0 as per this MS article:

You probably have to take ownership of the files and/or folders that are denying you access. This Microsoft article is about taking ownership in XP.

Use the forum search engine with the search terms, folder ownership vista to find more posts about this, some of which may have more information specific to Vista.

And for a good time (faster, more reliable, etc.), upgrade your OS to Win 7 ASAP.

Hope that helps. 🙂

Yep, already took ownership... did a comprehensive search here and found a promising thread... waited the 10 minutes to take ownership of my 200GB worth of junk...

I even tried to map a network drive... "Access denied!!"

Wooo! Surprise!

RE: upgrading... that won't happen for a while... maybe my next build though... mooooney

When I first had to take ownership of a folder on another drive, I found I could only do it successfully when booted in Safe Mode.

It appeared to transfer ownership just dandy in normal boot.. so I don't think I'll have to do that.

I've seriously tried everything out there.... it's just plain ghetto.

I love you microsoft
