sharing between 2 computers

I have 2 computers networked to share my internet cable. I've got 2 nics in my main machine and my other computer is connected to the 2nd nic via a cross-over cable. The software I'm using is Internet Connection Sharing in Windows 98. My question is: Is it possible to share files between the two computer with this setup? If not, what else do I need or have to change in order to share files. Thanks for any input.

Yes, you can share files with this setup also... If your network works properly (ie. you can see both PCs in Network Neighborhood), just need to enable File and Printer Sharing, and setup some files/folders to be shared...

However, it is recommended to have some kind of firewall in place, or else other ppl from the internet can easily access the files on your server PC...

that's the problem. i can't see both computers in network neighborhood. what settings do i need to change? the network is okay because the internet connection is still being shared.

Go here for instructions on setting up your network...

You should specify these settings for the 2 NICs that are connected with the crossover cable... Don't touch the settings for the NIC that is connected to the cable modem in your server PC...

thanks for the help. i've tried everything on that site and the only drives i see at each computer are the local ones. i can ping the client computer with my server so the network seems okay. i think i just have to tinker with the settings to make them share. anyone know the correct network settings to allow this?

Make sure they have the exact same workgroup, and an unique computer name. Then you need to give them the same subnet...

Can you see the other PC in your Network Neighborhood?

An easy way to fix this is install Netbeui on both PC... That should easily let you share files between the two computers...

Also try these TCP/IP settings:

Server PC:
IP - 192.168.0.1
SubMask - 255.255.255.0

Client PC:
IP - 192.168.0.2
Submask - 255.255.255.0

Remember they need the exact workgroup name and different computer name... spelling counts...

That's exactly how my network was configured but still the other computer is not showing up. Can I use netBEUI with windows 98?

Yes, NetBeui is another protocol like TCP/IP... you can use it with win98...

That's very strange... you should be able to share files with that configuration... Did you enable file and printer sharing on both PCs? Sorry this may seem obvious but just wanna make sure...
