Sharing anomaly on LAN

I have a LAN with three computers on it -- all running Windows XP with SP2. Call the computers A, B and C. So far as I can tell all are set up exactly the same. A can see and open any files or folders shared on B and C. B and C see and can open shared files and folders on each other -- in other words B and C share files and folders just as you would expect. Now for the problem, B and C can see (they show up when I open My Network Places) files and folders shared on A, but they can't be opened. I do not have a firewall in the way.

All three machines have Zone Alarm on them with the LAN set as "trusted" -- and yes I have double verified that the address is correct.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

cprince and Fardringle,

Thanks for replying.

It is a permission problem. For example computer A is named Laboratory. One of the shared folders on A is Photofile with many items in it. In My Network Places on either B or C Photofile on Laboratory shows up as one of the network resources being shared. Clicking on the icon for Photofile however pops up an error box saying:

\\Laboratory\Photofile is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administartot of this server to find out if you have access permission.

Access denied

I am administrator on all three computers and so far as I can tell the network settings are identical on all three computers

Successful Sharing involves some general consideration in Network settings, http://www.ezlan.net/sharing.html

As well as specific adjustment of each computer according to what it is allowed to be shared.

Thanks to all who have responded to my question.

Further research -- both on my machines and on net -- suggest the problem arose after I allowed a recent Microsoft Net Framework SP update. Can't be sure, but that seems a likely culprit.

I use simple file sharing on all computers. There are no access permissions involved. There are only a few large folders to be shared on each machine, and any user on any machine should be able to access anything in any of the shared folders. It would be preferable that only a user on a specific machine be able to modify contents of folders shared on that machine -- but universal rights would not be a serious problem. All machines are on the same LAN/workgroup.

Do they all login using the same admin ID/password? Might have to map the drive using the user ID/password from the machine you are connecting to..
