sharing a printer - problems!

I have two desktop computers (older ones, ~233 mhz I think, win98) that I'm trying to share a printer on. I have a auto switching box that claims to support two computers talking to one printer. The printer is a laserjet 4. When I hooked it up, all I could get out of the printer were blank pages. I tried printing test pages from both machines, got just blank paper. I then hooked it up to another computer (P3, 450 mhz, win98 also) and a deskjet 540. There, I got the test page to print but it added a blank sheet after it. Any idea where my problem lies? The laserjet works fine when connected directly to any of the three computers, ditto for the deskjet. Somehow the switchbox seems to be causing problems, but different problems dependingon the setting.
