right click on desired folder > properties > sharing (tab)
Set permissions and passwords over there.

there is no permissions and passwords in the sharing tab...all i see is a checkbox for share this folder on the network and a checkbox for let other users modify my files

you have to add a user account and give them access to the folder. I suggest asking this in the networking forum and you'll get lots of help there.

You may have to run Network Setup Wizard to set up sharing of files and folders.

Start Menu > Programs > Communication > Network setup wizard.
See if this works otr not. Then again follow my last post (#2).

Also, you may have to disable simple file sharing in Tools(menu) > Folder options > View (tab) >
scroll to bottom and disable simple file sharing.

Bingo. As long as you are running XP Pro, you need to disable Simple File Sharing which is on by default in workgroups. (Simple file sharing is forced in XP Home - Which is partly why most Universities ask that you run XP Pro)

After thats disabled, as said above, right click on a folder you want to share, and choose sharing an security. After you have created a new XP user account, you can assign that username access rights, and set its permissions (ie. read only).

aite, thanks guys for all the help it works now...but one more question, if i try and access my pc through the my network places or net neighborhood of other pc's i get No Permission to access resource, even though i have 2 folders shared(non password protected). Using the net use command i can gain access to those folders but not through the network browser...whats up with that?
