Sharing a file on Windows 2003 Server

I just upgrade from windows2000 server to windows 2003 server. Now I have it installed I want to share one drive with my LAN. In Win2kServer, all I did was enable the sharing for the drive and it was accessible from anywhere on the LAN. I tried the same thing on the new installation and can't access the drive anywhere else on the LAN except at my web server (Windows 2003 Server Trial) and it accesses it just fine.

When I try to access the new server (\\servername) from another LAN computer, it prompts me to enter a username/password. I try to log in as administrator with the admin pw (of the problem server) and it tells me I don't have access to the share. It does this from any computer on the LAN except the web server as mentioned above. I did the exact same install to the web server when I set it up two weeks ago and never ran into any sharing problems on it. Any ideas?

Sharing the root of a drive is not recommended. I don't know offhand, but I wouldn't be surprised if 2k3 server prevents it entirely. Try sharing individual folders?

Roots of drives are already shared for administrative purposes (\\server\c$ \\server\d$, etc).

I'll move the contents of the hard drive into a folder and share it that way when I get home. Sharing the 30+ indivdual folders would make it harder than just going back to windows2k server. This is basicly a network drive so it's been shared for around 4 years now. I already seen the hard drives were shared for "administrative purposes" and I added my own share to it and gave it the permisions needed.

Funny thing is I can access the file server just fine from my web server (also running 2003server), both on the same network.

To share a folder you need to manage the security tab as well in the folder options window.

I was going to say the same, share rights have nothing to do with NTFS file rights

Would this still leave it readable by another server box and not the rest of the network?

I might move back to win2kserver for now. I find it weird that my web server, with the same install and everything, works fine. I played with security, added/removed users, remade the share, played with all the settings relating to the hard drive with no change. And I can't find information on this problem anywhere. It's not worth the headache.

Were you using the same account on machines you couldn't get to the share from as the account you used on the web server?

I solved the problem for now. I setup the IP address to be a static one and got it to work from there.
