Sharing a Cable Internet Connection?????

Sandan

I am getting Cable Internet this week from Adelphia which is a 2way connection. I am really confused on what I need to share the connection between my 2 computers. What I want to do is surf different web addresses on the 2 computers at the same time. Do I need a Hub and a Router? I read in the spec's of a Linksys router (Linksys EtherFast 4-Port Cable/DSL Router, BEFSR41, offered at Best Buy) that this router eliminates need for an additional hub or switcher. Any help would be appreciated.

i dunno if dsl and cable are pretty much the same, but with my dsl i have 2 ethernet cards in my box, one connected to my hub the other connected to my modem. on the other computer i have ethernet card connected to hub. both computers are set up with internet connection sharing through their respective cards. i didn't have to buy an extra ip or anything.

oh, i got the netgear 4 port hub at best buy really cheap and it works great

What OS do you have? I would probably end up going with the router setup because you don't have to have both computers on at the same time. With most routers you get built in firewall features also. The setup mentioned by lo6ic will work, but I think the best would be a LinkSys or SMC Barricade (has a built in printer port to share a printer on your network).

Thanks for the quick response guys. Igiveup, I am using Win98. lo6ic, with your setup can each computer visit different sites at the same time?

yeah sand, we're using winme as host and win98se as one of the clients. like i said, though, it's dsl and i don't know the difference between that and cable. the only problem i've noticed is that icq direct connections won't work for us (chat or dcc send).

Not sure what you are trying to say here.

If all you do is want to surf different web addresses just open another internet explorer window and there you go surf all you wnat on 2 browsers or more.

If you want both computers to have internet access for other reasons (mine being, for my roommate) You need to:

1. Get a router to create private ip address for the other computer.
2. Get a hub and order another ip address for the other computer (5 bucks extra a month)
3. Build a freesco router
4.Run Windows 2000 on your machine and let it serve the other computer

Having a router is the most parsimonious solution. Once you start using internet sharing software one of your computers has to act as a server and be on at all times. (I live in CA and electricity is a concern).

If you bought a router there would be no need to have one computer set up as a server.

Recently there has been deals on 4 port router hubs that ranbe in price from 80-140.

My reccomedation for a router goes as follows all of these routers are easy to configure for internet sharing.

1 Netgear 314 (reliable ppoe) very fast but you need to use a telent interface for advance configs
2 Linksys (easy to configure)
3 SMC (it is usually the cheapest but IMO very ugly and has a built in power switch with print server)
