I have a user who is getting the following error working with a sharepoint server:
"'Edit Document' requires a Windows SharePoint Services-compatible application"

We also see the message :"Install OWC 2000"

She is running Office 2000 on an XP SP2 machine. I have been through the steps listed in this thread:
http://www.frontpages-web-host...tible-application.html

She has office and office12 directories on her harddrive.

Is a later version of office required? This article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/833714 seems to indicate such. I have tried to find the workstation requirements for sharepoint unsuccessfully.

Any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

thanks,

Maureen

The lack of Office 2000 and SharePoint integration is an artificial limitation imposed by Microsoft. In my corporate environment, we have Office 2000 and Outlook XP/2003. Simply having a newer version of Outlook enabled our users to edit documents directly on SharePoint.

I personally have not had any luck with copying Office12 files over and registering the newer owssupp.dll.

There is a guide on MSD2D.com that shows you how to edit SharePoint 2003 files to allow for Office 2000 to edit files directly on SharePoint. The site is having some issues right now, but I'll see if I can find the link when it's back up again. The main catch was that the modification would tell the user (and only users of Office 2000) that the script was unsafe when they tried to edit a file in SharePoint.

For what it's worth, Office 2000 users can edit files directly in SharePoint 2007. It's also not as dependent on Office for the GAL, which does require Outlook 2003.

thanks very much. I need to get this working pretty soon and I've been having no luck so far. We're a non-profit so we are running alot of old software and when the site this user works with started using sharepoint she started having problems. i'm still trying to find out what version of sharepoint they are using.

Thanks again for your help,

Maureen

Another option is to use WebDAV. The upside is you can edit files directly on SharePoint. The downside is you lose the web interface.

Windows XP has it built-in through My Network Places. If it feels laggy, try enabling/disabling the WebClient service. You need to reboot once you've made the change. A more robust client WebDrive, it costs money but it has a free trial.

I don't have a Windows XP computer handy, but go to My Network Places then Add a network place. You will have the option of typing in the URL of the SharePoint site then you should be prompted for a username and password, which is also the one you would use on the SharePoint site.
