Shared printer help

2 machines hooked up with a crossover cable running xp home sharing a basic HP usb printer. The machine that the printer is not hooked up to refuses to print until the machine the printer is hooked to prints. Any ideas of a solution?

I'm trying to avoid having to purchase a usb print server if possible.

What is the exact model number of the printer? Some printers simply do not work well when shared.

Download the newest drivers for your printer from www.hp.com. Completely uninstall and reinstall the printer (using the new drivers) on the PC it is connected to, share it again, then uninstall and reinstall the printer on the second PC and try printing again.

I don't know the model but will get the information on it shortly. Its about a 1 year old HP deskjet. I'm not sure what drivers or software have been installed so I will try the newest ones to see if that makes a difference.

If the computer that the printer is hooked up to prints a page, the other computer can then print something. If it does not first print a page, the other computer cannot print.
