Anyone ever heard of this concept?
As far as I know it has to do with the idea that experioence and conciousness are passed on through our genes. I have been looking for info on this to no avail... Anyone shed some light on this topic...

You might want to look at the writings of Carl Jung. I believe he developed the idea of the collective unconscious and archetypes.

I think I've heard about this. Some examples:

If you train rats to go through a certain maze, a different group of rats (in a different part of the world) would tend to learn the same maze faster. It's almost as if the original rats passed on the knowledge through a collective conscious.

Also, back in my days (I'm an old fart), most kids learned Calculus in College but now most kids seem to learn it in high school. In fact, I've seen a lot of kids in high school studying subjects that was once considered college level subjects. Why are kids finding these subjects easier than kids of the past? A possible explanation is a "collective conciousness" where the previous generation contributes knowledge so that these subjects are not as difficult to the newer generation.

Discuss...

I don't buy the collective unconscious theory... I think it's more a matter of similiarities in the structure of the human brain. An example of this theory is the "Hero with a thousand faces" phenomenon... that every culture across the entire globes posess similiarities in folklore. The heros always have similiar attributes, and similiar adventures.

As for the calculus thing, I think thats more a matter of learning how to better teach Mathematics, and better understanding of our our learning capacity.

i guess in the science fiction books collective conscious is basically a group of people that aren't individuals and don't think for themselves but collectively everyone can. I think this is slightly different from what you're talking about. Personally I think Jung is somewhat right, that we have hardwired conscious.

what is to say those rats in the differnt part of the world aren't just more conditioned to that type of problem solving? maybe they live in an area with many caves and cavern type things. or in a bustling city with only certain ways from point a to b. they would obviously be more adept at solving mazes because they have been doing the type of activity their whole life.

kids parents today are more educated than their parents. our schools are better, lots of research has gone into learning mechanisms and have been applied into our public schools. the way it was before was simply we didn't know how to effectivly teach and didn't care that much because well, we didn't need to. things weren't as complicated back then, you could drop out of school at 16 and make a good living, now days you have to graduate to get a job at mc donalds.

As far as kids studying stuff in High School, perhaps it is an evolution in teh way kids think these days. Remember that today's kids are OF the computer generation... heck, they ARE the computer generation. Part of evolution is "getting smarter."

351Cleveland:

personally i dont' think we can evolve past our current state of consciousness without some type of major event. our society is to dilute, the stupidest man alive can reproduce just as fast as the smartest man alive, and will have no problem doing it. on another note, we would almost become dumber, because the smart man would know we are nearing a population overload and would not have an excessive number of children when the stupid man, is well, stupid and would "breed like rabbits" as they say. henceforth actually making our society de-evolve.

the way evolution works is when some obsticle is blocking us from doing something we overcome it ( disease, physical limits etc.) and we grow around it. in todays society we just move out of the way, if there is a high amount of disease you are vulnerable to, just move to the next neighborhood, therefore you, the faulty person still gets to pass on the vulnerabilities to the disease and stopping evolution from creating an immunity to it.

the only way i see us evolving next is from either genetic engineering or planatary colonization. that way people are isolated enough to evolve, develop around their environment and become a superior race.

EDIT: forgot a period
