shared hosting versus reseller account?

I took the advice from Rossman many years ago and signed up with Thrillhost, who changed to Midphase, who is now Auctica. Got in on a killer deal on a reseller account.

Been having some problems with them. Nothing major, but when I asked for support last week, they mentioned that they'd like to get me on a new plan as the current $10 reseller one I'm on is really old.

Anyway, I've been looking around and see reseller accounts and shared accounts. I'm not in the reselling business. Just looking for something where I can easily manage my personal site, plus a small handful of others that I'm helping out with the hosting on.

What's the different between a shared plan (that offers multiple domains) and a reseller account? Who's the hot hosting company these days? I don't mind spending $10-$20/month. I'm not necessarily looking for one of the $15/year deals.

I usually use namecheap.com for registration. Would it make sense to also host with them?

Thanks!
Aaron

I personally use hostgator, have for about 2 years now. I have a reseller account. The main difference between them is that you can create domains and have that person manage the domain themselves vs shared hosting where you can setup domains but only you can manage it (unless you give away the credentials to your management page which if you did wouldn't be smart). Reseller accounts come with two management pages, the reseller page and the domain specific management page. If they're all your sites, a shared hosting would be the way to go. If your looking to create domains for others for profit and you want them managing their own domain, go with reseller. Basically, a reseller account creates other shared hosting accounts

Depending on the hosting space and bandwidth policies, if they are Not unlimited, when using Reseller account you have to a assign specific space and Bandwidth for each sub account.

In shared account you do not have to, and the system will use the space and bandwidth as needed.

This is correct.

thanks guys - that explanation makes total sense. Comes down to I'll be the only admin for these sites, so paying extra for the re-seller doesn't make much sense for me. In fact, admin'ing on multiple cpanels was a little tedious on my current reseller account. 1 main panel sounds easier anyway.

I came across hostgator on another hosting recommendation site last nite. They look pretty good - I'll probably just for for their mid-shared package.

Hostgator's pretty good, as is bluehost, godaddy is decent. All of them are just for the simple page testers/personal sites/less than 300 visits a day. I personally got sick of them all and use a Debian Linux VPS server from Steadcom :). Now though I'm considering an upgrade to a dedicated server from CoreNetworks.com
