Shared directory is missing a ton of random folder! DFS to blame?

I have at work a windows server 2003 R2 file server. We have gigs and gigs of data that is shared. We have another server located across town that we use DFS with. Yesterday I noticed tons of random data that was in use in the last 30 days or so have totally disappeared. I am using volume shadow to move all the bits and pieces back but WTF???? I know users have not deleted or moved anything because they cant. The only thing I am thinking is the DFS somehow got corrupt. Is that possible? Its a oneway from me to the remote site. I cant think of anything else. Can DFS screwup and delete gigs of random data from the share drive?
