I'd like your opinion on something..
Right now I'm wondering if I should upgrade my cpu mainly for gaming purposes..

Well you need some clues to help me with this...

1. I play at the gpu limited resolution 1600x1200 with as much AA as possible. So I only care for this resolution and not lower ones..
2. I have a 4400+ @2.75GHz right now with 2x1GB ram and a X1900XT@XTX
3. I will definately pick a new gen high end card from ATI or Nvidia when they will be released..

So my main question is.. Would you upgrade your cpu+mobo+ram if you were in my shoes, does it worth it? Or should I wait for Intel's quad core(Kentsfield) or AMD's 4x4 in the near future? Lat but not least have you heard any other news on the cpu roadmaps except the Quad cores from both companies for the near future (4-5 months)?

Thanks in advance..

I have friends who have less than you and are happy gaming.

If you have to upgrade, wait a few months, until all the bustle settles so you can get a clear picture of what's happening.

As you said, upgrading your stuff is weighing on your mind but at least you understand what's involved. Also, the prices may get better.
Have you seen the RAM prices?

I wouldn't. At 16x12 and above the GPU is your main bottleneck. You'd see a fairly limited improvement with a faster chip.

Yeah I know Pabster..
But I saw some damn fine improvements on AT's benches @1600x1200 in some games...

Does anyone have any other AM2vsCore duo benches @1600x1200 except AT ones?

And then I'm thinking on waiting to see if Kentsfield would bring anythig better on the scene or AMD's 4x4...

Dunno..

Waiting is a terrible game. You can be "waiting" forever, because something new is always just around the corner.

Kentsfield is gonna be a beast, no doubt about it, but that beast is going to come at a price. And if you wait for Kentsfield prices to drop, an 8-core monster will likely come out! :p

Yeah I know that... I'm not for the waiting game either... But this time I'd make a move for it only if it would bring immediate performance yields into the scene.. I bought my dual core too early w/o many gains last year so I'd like to see what quad cores can do this time..
