ok, so the title describes it.... I need to setup a server that is running linux to share files and directories. I need to be able to set up some basic security on this directory structure and I need to be able to have client machines connect to these and use these files from anywhere. a web interface would be cool, but so mapped drive letters. Actually, mapped drives would probably be the easiest to explain to the users. If its not a drive letter, it'll need to be web based and would REALLY need to be drag and drop (ajax maybe?)
Overall though, I'm looking at a central file server that needs to share files in 4 locations (plus homes and on clients sites) for about 200 users. Users will be using everything from win98 to xp home to vista to OSX. Server will be linux, distro is irrelevant.
I thought about openswan and vpns to samba shares, but while its secure it'll be slow and these users are pretty dumb (connecting each time will be over some of their heads)..... it needs to be fairly easy after inital setup. On the same token, samba shares over SSH using multiple vitual loopback interfaces on the clients seems alittle nuts to setup for each.
TIA
