Sharapova makes number one spot

Maria Sharapova has replaced injured American Lindsay Davenport as world number one.

The 18-year-old, who has won three titles this year, is the first Russian woman to reach the top of the WTA rankings since their inception in 1975.

Sharapova would have toppled Davenport earlier this month but was forced to pull out of the JPMorgan Chase Open because of a chest injury.

"It's a dream come true to become number one in the world," she said.

"The computer doesn't lie," she said. "You have to achieve something to get there and it's been an amazing two years.

"It's been all about hard work and dedication and the achievement has been amazing."

I thought it better to forego the obvious fatdong.net reference.

I am the marvel of self-restraint these days.

It was a pectoral muscle injury that forced her to pull out.

Glad she made it, but it was inevitable anyway.

Bah... women's tennis is lacking a true #1 these days. I look fondly back when I had to choose whether to root for the cheater henin-hardenne or the freak Serena to be #1.

But on the other hand I guess it's not too exciting to watch federer beat the living crap out of everyone 50000000000 times in a row either. OK, actually it is because his shots are so dang impressive, but the ouctome is unexciting.
