HOENIX -- Shaquille O'Neal will lose his special deputy's badge in Maricopa County because of language he used in a rap video that mocks former teammate Kobe Bryant.

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio said the Phoenix Suns center's use of a racially derogatory word and other foul language left him no choice. Arpaio made Shaq a special deputy in January and promoted him to colonel of his largely ceremonial posse earlier this month.

"I want his two badges back," Arpaio told The Associated Press on Tuesday. "Because if any one of my deputies did something like this, they're fired. I don't condone this type of racial conduct."

Shaq was seen in a video posted on the celebrity news and gossip Web site TMZ.com rapping that "Kobe couldn't do without me." O'Neal skewers the Lakers' star, with whom he won three straight NBA titles from 2000-2002 while with Los Angeles, for not being able to win a championship without him.

"I was freestyling. That's all. It was all done in fun. Nothing serious whatsoever," O'Neal told ESPN.com Monday. A call to the Suns on Tuesday seeking comment from O'Neal was referred to his public relations firm, which didn't immediately respond.

Arpaio, who describes himself as "America's Toughest Sheriff" and is best known for feeding jail inmates green bologna, clothing them in pink underwear, and making them work on chain gangs, said he didn't expect his actions would teach Shaq a lesson. But he hoped he learns that as a role model who wants to someday be a full-time sheriff, he needs to know his words matter.

"Maybe I'm old fashioned, but I don't think that either conduct should be out there publicly, even if media wasn't there," Arpaio said.

O'Neal previously served as a reserve officer with the Miami Beach Police Department while playing for the Miami Heat. He also volunteered with the Tempe Police Department after being traded to the Suns in February.

Guess he should have thought twice before playa-hatin' on kobe, eh?

Yeah. He's a little notorious for his dehumanizing prison conditions and medieval practices, and is wildly popular for them.

Both of these guys are total assholes, but at least Shaq is irrelevant to anything but basketball.

:Q the guy's a monster! he should be put in his own jail. take a moment and read about him and what he's done over the years. he's a fucking bastard! while his actions may have helped in very limited aspects, there's still human rights you need to consider.

a couple of people have died in his prison (remember The Shawshank redemption and how that captain beats that fat guy to death?, well same thing here) and he doesn't even feed the inmates properly. i hope that one day somebody arrests him and put him through the same hell he's been through.

disclaimer: not saying the inmates aren't guilty and shouldn't be punished, but not like the frankly medieval ways they are by this POS.

These fucking morons should stick to what they know...playing basketball, and leave the talking to folks with some semblance of intelligence.

He feeds his inmates teh bologna?

One of the things that he's made a big deal of was dramatically cutting the cost of feeding inmates. I've never eaten there....but yeah, he seems to use the cheapest possible lunch meats.

That said, he's also pushed right up to the limit of legal authority, and sometimes over it.

Why was he ever a deputy?

I don't know that this was specifically the case here, but in most places, Sheriff is an elected, political office. It doesn't hurt to have an endorsement or two.

Also, a position as a 'special deputy' or 'reserve deputy' means that, theoretically, a person is a law enforcement officer. This allows access to certain toys otherwise restricted.

Shit, didn't Elvis have an honorary badge?

and what do you think the inmates should be fed? I haven't seen any news stories stating inmates died from malnutrition.

prison should be a deturrent, not the "country club" they seem now, where gangsta's get to rule in absentia.

maybe if we added some "caning" our prisons wouldn't be overcrowded.

yes, because green bologna and pink underwear is medieval and dehumanizing. Maybe you should pick up a book about medieval prisons before you make an idiotic comment like that.

Also, Shaquille O'Neal has maintained a high level of interest in the workings of the police department and has become personally involved in law enforcement. O'Neal went through the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Reserve Academy and became a reserve officer with the L.A. Port Police. He is seen in a commercial for ESPN in Miami Police garb climbing up a tree to rescue LSU mascot Mike the Tiger. On March 2, 2005, he was given an honorary U.S. Deputy Marshal title and named the spokesman for the Safe Surfin' Foundation; he served an honorary role on the task force of the same name, which tracks down sexual predators who target children on the Internet.[31] Upon his trade to Miami, O'Neal began training to become a Miami Beach reserve officer; on December 8, 2005, he was sworn in as a reserve officer (he elected a private ceremony so not to distract the other officers from their special moment). Shortly thereafter, in Miami, O'Neal was a witness to a hate crime and called Miami-Dade police, giving them a description of the suspect and helping police, over his cell phone, track the offender. O'Neal credits this as his first "arrest".

God I hate sheriff Joe. He is such a publicity whore its ridiculous. He was probably so happy that Shaq did this rap, just so he could make a press release because hes a complete jackass like that.

Only the old folks in Sun City like sheriff joe

Before Sheriff Arpaio , the county jail here was a joke. Prisoners drank coffee, smoked cigarettes, watched cable TV and had girlie magazines. Arpaio put an end to all that. The County Board refused to build him new jail space so prisoners routinely served only part of their time. Arpaio's response was to buy surplus tents from the Army and stuck the excess meatheads in what's now called Tent City.
Bleeding hearts have ripped into him relentlessly for years but every election he wins by a landslide. The Board has tried to make the office of Sheriff an appointed position so they could fire him, but the voters turned that down, then voted them out.
He's also the only Sheriff in AZ that actively enforces the state's new human smuggling law(which makes illegal immigration, well, illegal) and even then he gets shredded by the press and city police chiefs. He truly is a martyr for law and order.

haha damnit! This is supposed to be about Shaq! I didn't spend my 20,000th post to talk about some jerkstore sheriff guy!

i'm not saying that jail should be a pushover, but we're no longer in the dark ages and we can't continue acting like we are.

My hero. I would vote for him if he runs for president.
