They can be effective; ultimately, a free-flowing style that takes aspects of multiple forms is far more effective.

Most karate you see is just for show. A lot of its either Chinese or Korean based as well. But if its meant to keep you safe then it works. Im a black belt in Okinowan Kempo and its not flashy at all.
 
Styling the movements of a martial arts style after those of animals have some rational thought behind it, above and beyond the showy hollywood trappings. The hunting and fighting styles of animals have evolved over time to be more effective. Beyond inspiration these styles were then crafted and modified for efficency.



In the end, the skill of the fighter plays a much greater roll than what style they use. Granted styles that do not incorporate grappling or ground techniques have areas of disadvantage. Ideally styles that have more damaging impacts could disarm an opponent before grappling occurs but why leave out an entire area of possible encounter.
