Thats a lot of progress in 20 years. But then again, shanghai has been developed to be the financial capital of china.

Amazing what you can do without all that pesky OSHA bullshit getting in the way.

Damn that's a fast change, not a lot of time to build so many skyscrapers.

Only a few buildings remain. Think of the first picture as being more zoomed in and you'll spot them. Having said that, 20 years, wow! To think it takes about 5 years to knock up just one building here due to red tape and lazy unions.

Actually, you can make out two of the buildings with pyramid roofs (don't know another way to describe it). The second pic is just zoomed out more.

Xi'an, 1980 vs. 2005:

Yes, that is the same intersection. My parents visited Xi'an in 1980-81 right when they opened up to foreign visitors and taught English to a few classes of professors. My mom went back in 2005 for a couple months and met several of her old students, some of whom are now faculty members of the university where she taught.

You'll see that almost all over parts of China. Rapid development and urbanization.

Amazing development, but really sad to see some of that great colonial architecture torn down and replaced with modern stuff. Then again, I'm sure the Chinese are happy to have gotten rid of colonial British influences anyhow.

Is that an actual 1990 photograph or a canvas painting, I really can't tell? I know they were 3rd world and all at the time but you'd think they'd have a better photograph since this is Shanghai we're talking about. While we're on the subject, the quality of the 2010 photo is a crying shame too.

There's three if you look hard enough. In the foreground on the left, the building with the pyramid roof is still there. In the 1990 photo, it's lit up with green lights. The green roofed building to the left of it is still there too. The clock tower on the far right of the 1990 photo is in the middle of the 2010 one.
