I just got my Opteron 165 with my DFI Lan Party motherboard. I'm looking to take this chip to 2.4ghz, possibly 2.6, and was wondering if it's worth my time to drive out and get some Artic Silver before I pop her in? I was going to get it from Newegg with my purchase but they wanted $6 for some and another $5 to ship it, which is completely absurd. I'm not looking to get insane on the OC until the chip is about a year or two old when I need to squeeze as much performance out of it as I can. I'm also worried that if I have to send the CPU+HSF back to AMD that if I used Artic Silver I will void the warranty?

I'll be putting this into a new Antec P180 case, which I plan on taking 4-6 hours to assemble and assure the best airflow/cooling possible.

IMHO..I think it is good for 1-3C at most..if you have other thermal paste do not waste your time, if not get it

 
AMD's stock thermal pad is Shin-Etsu right?

Doesn't SVC still have it for $5-$6 shipped?

I think with the IHS, Arctic Silver might not make too much of a difference, as opposed to using Arctic Silver on a bare core VS. generic paste.
 
I think it has a small effect. But for like $4 for a tube that last forever I consider it one of the better buys I've made in computing.
 
lmao how do you guys go about lapping a thing... electronic sander? cus i tried with a old hsf and i failed miserably.. oneside got alot steeper then the other while it felt like equal pressure...
 
Lapping is not necessary unless you have a poorly crafted base (a lot of ridges, poor finish). That way it fills the ridges and valleys on the bottom, for more contact. If you have a really nice base (Thermalrights and Zalmans etc...) then lapping will probably adversely affect your results.

I would definitely get some AS5, great stuff :thumbsup:

I'm just asking, he was banned for being with AEG so I don't think he will becoming a mod anytime soon.

But it's your sig and you can do what you want with it. Sorry for bringing it up. 🙁

He wasn't banned. Odds are he wont be a mod, but he certainly wasn't banned.

Back on topic, SVC does have free shipping for AC5.
Get that. Scrap off that nasty thermal pad and put a drop of AC5 on there.
The stock HS is pretty good for the 165.

I wouldn't stick with the pad, but just about ANY paste will work.. And work rather well.
