Shake lights

I heard they were all terrible. Most have no overchage protection. You'll be shaking that thing for ten minutes straight just to get a 20% charge that will last a few minutes. Better off just having spare alkalines laying around.

does it actually work? and work well?

i been thinking of snagging a few. for the cars and house. i hate having hte power go out and have the damn thing have dead batteries.

They work fine if you get a decent one. They're just an induction coil, capacitor, and an LED. Really simple so there's nothing much to go wrong.

So far they work well. They're bright and I haven't had to shake them since I got them but I don't use them too often.

Oddly enough it works just like a fleshlight, move it up and down real fast for 10 minutes for a couple of seconds of fulfillment.

my dad bought one of those lights but the kind with the handcrank that doesnt need batteries, cause his gf recommends them. i seriously hate the $*(@&#$()* )(@&*#& $)(*@#$ &)(@#* &$( thing. i want to throw that and his POS 1 million candle power flood light spot light flash light thing in the trash, both last less than a minute at full light power, which is the point of them. my 4 year old cell phone gives off as much light as those things. all 3 are better than nothing. but i would rather use a real flashlight.

Beware of fakes. Many have 2xCR2032 (lithium coin cells) which should be good for 20-25 hours constant-on. I think that the batteries need to be removed once discharged for the shake mechanism to work. However, the shake mechanism is sometimes faked: magnet is an unmagnetized metal slug, induction coil is not wired to anything, or no capacitor is present.

I bought a few from ClearPointDirect.com (sort of sketchy site) for $5 each plus shipping. They had batteries and are not waterproof, but the shake mechanism is genuine and works fine with the batteries removed. The capacitor seems to retain charge fine - it lights up after sitting for two weeks.

In my experience, shake lights are passable (very dim), but I think the $30 for a good one is better spent on a small LED light and lithium AAs.
