The Shadows of Lylat - fan made Star Fox game based on the Freespace 2 engine.

Looks impressive to say the least, 6 years in the works. But I have this sneaking suspicion that it likely won't be around for much longer now that it's gathering press.

Maybe Nintendo will just force them to change the name and any references to Star Fox, like Activision did when a group tried to do a fan made King's Quest sequel a couple years back.

I still don't get why companies don't just let these fan games go. Unless they're making money off of your character I don't see the point in playing the copyright card.

I think they don't want anybody missing with the continuity of the series and messing up their plans for any potential sequels. It does seem like another example of big companies flexing their corporate muscles.

Not just sequels, but also $10 virtual console / PSN / XBLA and $20-30 PSP / DS versions.

Yup, anyone who doesn't get why they don't just "let old games go" hasn't been paying attention to the large number of "old" game releases.
They are still making money off of them, why give that up?
Plus you never know if a sequel to Starfox will be made in the future.
