Shadowmask For Gaming???

I am desperatly trying to find the "right" 19 inch monitor. I don't want to spend too much, but as the monitor is the most important part of the system, I could warrant up to $400 or so if it is REALLY worth it. It seems to me that most of the decent Aperature Grill monitors are around $400, and that a decent shadowmask can be had for around $300. I like the looks of the NEC Accusync 90 and the Hitachi CM715. Both shadowmasks that can run 1280x1024@85hz, and both are very sharp I've been told. Howerver, I'm worried about the colors and brightness. I can get a Sony G400 or NEC FP950, which are AG, for a little over $400 which have great colors and can do 1600x1200@85hz, but if the NEC or Hitachi will work well I'd rather go with one of them. The monitor will be used almost completely for gaming, DVDs, and web editing, with some typing and browsing. Do you think I'd be satisfied the the Hitachi or NEC shadowmask? and if so which one? or should I spend the extra $$$$$ on the Sony or NEC w/ AG?

For gaming, you'll be happier with the Sony G400. A shadowmask monitor doesn't even come close to the color saturation found on AG monitors.

I agree. The color vibrancy of my Aperture-grill 21" ViewSonic P810 monitor blows the doors off my other monitor: a Shadow mask 17" TTX-1770.

i have a 19@ NEC FE950, its great, very crisp. i could never go back to a curved shadow mask. euw!

Heh, Hate to be the oddball here - but I have a Hitachi 21" SuperScan 812 monitor. It is a shadowmask monitor and I love it. I've had it for a year+ now and paid 800 for it at a computer show. The only time I even notice the shadowmask is when a game is loading and I have a completely black screen (like right while the monitor is switching resolutions). My personal rundown of the monitor is this: it's not flat screen, it does have a visible shadowmask, its image quality is amazing(no exageration) and the controls are very extensive.

Not knocking the other monitors - just had to stick up for one of the shadowmask monitors since I doubt a lot of people have even seen this monitor(It gets mentioned very seldom it seems) 🙂. Good luck with your purchase and no doubt whatever you pick you will enjoy it.

My personal opinion is to take a look at the monitors before you make a decision!

EDIT: I play a whole ton of games on this thing incase I didn't make that clear 🙂

Get the best of both types, the LG 915FT Flatron use new type of screen, with no wires but gives you great colour detail.

That's like saying my Porsche 911 blows the doors off my 69 Volkswagen beetle. I don't know what you are smoking but the last time I looked the ViewSonic p810 was a shadow mask monitor. Nice to hear it has great color saturation. BTW it has a 0.22mm Horizontal dot pitch.
